THOUGH ‘ANDHADUN’ WAS THE STORY OF A ‘BLIND’ MAN, IT OPENED BOLLYWOOD’S EYES TO BRILLIANCE

The Bollywood has often been criticized for making movies where logic is something which is harder to discover than the ending. We had a great start to 2018 with movies like ‘RACE 3’ and ‘VEEREY KI WEDDING’ performing awesome in providing enough of the meme material for the rest of the year. Towards the end of the year though, we saw a shift in the preferences of the audience moving towards gripping storylines as such of ‘BADHAAI HO‘, ‘RAAZI’ and ‘ANDHADHUN’; two of which starred Ayushmann Khurrana and yes, there were other good movies too but I chose these three particularly because my preference goes first! Kidding! Andhadhun specifically, came out as a surprise not only for a majority of public but also to directors clinging on to the fan base of top actors of the industry and it applies to all the movies who made big despite being made on a low budget. The film according to me stood firmly on the three pillars I would say any movie needs to strengthen in order to perform well.

1- PLOT

The biggest strength this film had was a strong and crisp story supporting small character development in every part of the movie. The audience were left holding onto their seat with the strong turning points of the movie. Unlike ‘THUGS OF HINDOSTAN’ and ‘RACE 3’ the appreciation from the audience side must put director Sriram Raghavan’s heart at ease. After all, who can forget the famous dialogue from Daisy Shah?? Also, I think a thriller might have been a good genre to introduce a new type of story among the audience during the time most of the films were either a documentary or a remake from the south.

2- Acting

An unusual pair usually doesn’t work in Bollywood but what do I know! Regardless, the cast proved themselves with a tactful, playful with their characters and made the best use of their talent. Honestly, anything more like ‘DHADAK’ and I would have hanged myself to a corner of my room!!! Keeping the jokes aside, Ayushmann imbibed a blind person perfectly, adding another plus point to the movie on my side.

3- Ending

The film succeeded in providing the kind of clever, mischievous and ambiguous ending the audience needed in a thriller comedy for a long time. It was a gamble which ended up leaving the audience in awe and hooked up enough to buy NETFLIX account! Seriously, regardless of what anyone may feel, it must have been the best feeling for both storywriter and director to watch the helpless audience grinding their teeth after the show, still trying to hunt the clues to the ending!
All in all, watching Andhadhun showed the end to the era of normal, easy going, straight and simple endings in a film and proved that the audience blindfolded by their favourite actors will be expecting much more than the flying cars defying the laws of the physics and have buckled up for brilliance in acting as well as plot. No offence to Karan Johar and Rohit Shetty!!
